49. Jennifer Kent

And hopefully, the woman who created it. Jennifer Kent wrote and directed one of the most imaginative films in years. It took Sundance – and then the critics – by storm, both for its tension filled storyline (sometimes that figure you spot in the corner of your eye really is there) and its directing style, which she began learning under Lars von Trier, but has turned into something uniquely her own. There’s a bit of her home state to be found in her first feature film – the titular creature bears more than a passing resemblance to the cockroaches we’ve come to expect as part of living in the sunshine state, but its Ms Kent’s view of the world and how she tells that story which will see her become one to watch.
