TweetFacebookJETS coach Phil Stubbins admitted his players were “a yard off the pace” from the outset after copping a 5-2 hammering from Melbourne City at Hunter Stadium on Tuesday.

City consolidated their play-off hopes and all but ended Newcastle’s after racing to a 3-0 lead within the first 24 minutes.

The visitors eventually coasted to victory and Slovenian import Robert Koren, who had been restricted to only 49 minutes in two games this season because of injuries, scored a hat-trick before he was given a well-deserved early mark by City coach John van’t Schip.

The lack of resistance Newcastle showed in defence was in stark contrast to their previous two performances, which yielded a 2-1 win against Adelaide and a luckless 1-0 loss to Melbourne Victory.

“I think the last two weeks took their toll on the players physically, just speaking to the group there,” Stubbins said.

“Melbourne City had an extra day off recovery.

“No excuses, obviously, but we just couldn’t match them and were a yard off the pace the whole game.

“To concede the goals that we did in the manner that we did, in that opening period of 10 minutes, was certainly not good enough . . . we were 3-0 down before we even started playing.”

Stubbins said that after the promising signs his players had shown against Adelaide and Victory, “we threw it all away tonight.”

Asked about his decision to stick with the same back-three defensive system, rather than reinstate skipper Kew Jaliens to the starting side after a two-game suspension, Stubbins said ”hindsight is a great thing”.

”Possibly we could have changed it up . . . [but] is it fair to leave out any of the boys at the back?” he said.

“It did flash across our minds, but we decided to go with the players that had done well in the past two games.

“As it turned out, it didn’t backfire. They just didn’t perform.”

Stubbins said City’s strike force boasted “speed and power and dynamism” and Newcastle simply struggled to contain them.

Van’t Schip was not completely satisfied with the performance, which continued a run of three wins and a draw in four games and consolidated his team’s hold on sixth position.

“But overall, of course, we are very happy,” he said.

“A lot of positives. Three goals from Robbie Koren, the two assists and goal of Damien Duff, so we can be happy about this game.

“It’s always difficult, looking at the past, playing here. And now going away with a good win and three points is a good end to this year.”

Going into the round-13 clash, City were sixth on 13 points, two points ahead of seventh-placed Brisbane.

They now have a five-point buffer, although the Roar have a game in hand.

The Jets were second-last on seven points but were hoping wins against City and Sydney FC, at Wollongong on Saturday, would lift them back into the finals race.

Instead they are now nine points adrift of the top six and will need a miracle in the New Year to avoid missing the finals for the fifth consecutive year.

Newcastle have only one win to their name this season and have conceded 28 goals in 13 games, seven goals more than any other team.

The Jets were booed off the pitch after conceding three goals and scoring none in a disastrous first half.

City struck first blood after only three minutes when Irish import Duff weaved his way into the box and was cut down from behind by Jets defender Allan Welsh, prompting referee Stephen Lucas to immediately issue a penalty.

Aaron Mooy converted from the spot to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.

They doubled the advantage six minutes later when Koren scored, pouncing after Newcastle’s Adrian Madaschi was unable to intercept a James Brown pass.

The home side were exposed again in the 24th minute when Duff scored from the edge of the box after a frantic goal-mouth scramble.

In need of a second-half renaissance, Stubbins introduced Jaliens from the bench, replacing winger James Virgili.

Newcastle’s first decent scoring opportunity did not arise until the 60th minute, when Welsh whipped in a cross and striker Joel Griffiths headed it straight to City goalkeeper Tando Velaphi.

Three minutes later, Koren scored his second after David Williams and Duff combined to exploit the wide open spaces deep in Newcastle’s territory to make it 4-0.

An Edson Montano goal, after lead-up play from David Carney and Jeronimo, gave the home-town fans rare cause to cheer in the 71st minute.

But two minutes later, Newcastle were again found wanting in front of goal as Coren produced a clinical finish for his hat-trick.

City’s defending was just as flimsy in the 79th minute when Jeronimo scored after a pass from Andrew Hoole.
