Maitland MP Robyn Parker announced she will retire from politics at the state election in March 2015.

Today’s final installment is the headline news stories from Septemberto December.

SEPTEMBER 4

Maitland Hospital mental health unit is struggling with an unusual rise in demand.

Patients are being transferred to other facilities across the region to access care.

Hunter New England Health has confirmed the hospital has experienced an unusually high need for mental health services in recent weeks and patients have had to be transferred to similar facilities at the Calvary Mater Newcastle or Manning Base Hospital.

A catalyst for the increased demand has not been identified but, for the Association of the Relatives and Friends of the Mentally Ill Hunter branch, the news is not surprising.

SEPTEMBER 10

Loud, out of control and unsupervised internet parties have made life miserable for some East Maitland residents who signed a petition to restore community safety.

Complaints have been made to police, Maitland City Council and Maitland MP Robyn Parker’s office.

An appeal has also been made to a real estate agent to have a tenant removed from a rental property where the parties are held.

The wild parties start when a call goes out via the internet and young people arrive from across the area, the Mercury was told.

Young people consume alcohol, urinate in public, have sex, fight and leave behind rubbish and broken glass, a source revealed.

Residents said three such parties had been held at a neighbouring property during the past 12 months.

More than 300 young people attended the second party.

A third party was held last Saturday night.

SEPTEMBER 12

A Cessnock woman was in shock and the local police station temporarily evacuated after an amazing error resulted in a bagful of plastic explosive being mistakenly handed over at Sydney airport on Thursday.

The incident has left the Australian Federal Police red-faced. They admitted to handing the woman 230 grams of plastic explosive in an unclaimed suitcase at Sydney Airport.

The explosives were apparently left behind after an AFP training exercise on August 14 and only discovered after the Cessnock woman had taken the unclaimed bag home.

SEPTEMBER 25

Hunter rugby league legend and Maitland councillor Brian Burke has slammed the end-of-season tradition of mad Monday after vandals damaged two of the city’s sports facilities this week.

Maitland Sportsground was targeted, with tyre tracks left across the playing surface, and the dressing shed at Telarah’s Coronation Oval was vandalised.

It is not clear who is responsible for the damage.

Cr Burke was outraged at the incidents, which he believed were related to the traditional mad Monday activities for sporting teams across the region, but stopped short of accusing specific clubs of causing the damage.
