NYE in Wollongong to go off with a bang

The annual alcohol-free family fireworks at Wollongong Harbour and the foreshore will be on again, with rides, food and live entertainment from 6pm.

The Wollongong Hawks will join the festivities after they wrap up their game against the Perth Wildcats at WIN Entertainment Centre.

Police inspector Darren Brown urged revellers to stick together and plan their journey to ensure they get home safely.

“Have fun and enjoy yourself but don’t go to excesses where you’re going to put yourself in danger,” he said.

“Look after each other as best as you can and always have someone with you, that’s normally a good thing to do.”

Wollongong City Council recommends people catch the train to Fairy Meadow, North Wollongong or Wollongong stations then take the Gong Shuttle Bus to their destination.

Several roads close to Wollongong Harbour will be closed between 5pm and 10.15pm, including Cliff Road (between Georges Place and Marine Drive), Harbour Street (between Cliff Road and Smith Street) and the harbour access ramp off Endeavour Drive.

Elsewhere the Shellharbour Club will host fireworks displays at 9pm and midnight, featuring carnival food, circus performers and games inside the Tasman Room between 6pm and 9.30pm.

The popular Kiama New Year’s Eve fireworks show will light up the harbour at 9pm, though people are advised to grab a picnic blanket and head down to Black Beach early for a prime position.

Kiama Golf Club will also hold fireworks at 9pm, as well as live entertainment and dining specials.

Shoalhaven residents will be spoiled for choice with 9pm fireworks shows at Voyager Memorial Park in Huskisson, Ulladulla Harbour and Berry Showgrounds (adult entry costs $5).

Watch two fireworks shows at The Shellharbour Club on New Year’s Eve. The night features a DJ and children’s entertainment in the Tasman Room from 6pm to 9pm.
